Flat worm phylum2/20/2024 ![]() ![]() The free-living (non-parasitic) flatworms are primarily aquatic, and most live in marine waters, moving along the bottom in a wavelike fashion.ĭogs, foxes, wolves, bears, and humans that eat raw or undercooked fish can swallow the larvae of two tapeworm species that subsequently lodge themselves in the small intestine. Flatworms do not possess an anus, just a mouth, and some do not even have a digestive tract. ![]() This is likely because these worms have typically complex life cycles that often require more than one species of host, and population sizes in the Arctic are small and patchy in distribution. There is some suggestion, however, that these parasites are less abundant in arctic mammals. Flatworms (Greek, platy="flat" helminth="worm") are distinguished by their lack of a body cavity – their internal organs are surrounded by loose tissue.Ī majority of flatworms are parasites – flukes and tapeworms – that infest a huge range of animals, both invertebrate and vertebrate. The flattened aspect of these worms results in shapes which range from pancakes to ribbon-like, and many are quite attractive, with delicate frills along their edges. ← Arctic_Life | ← More Animals | ← More Invertebrates | ← More Parasitic Worms ![]()
